Specific gravity is measured with a hydrometer or refractometer at 60°F. Typical OG runs 1.030 to 1.080 for most beer; FG settles between 1.005 and 1.018. Above 7% ABV, trust the advanced formula.

About

Homebrewers measure starting (OG) and final (FG) gravity to figure out how much sugar fermented and how much alcohol it made. This uses the standard formula ABV = (OG - FG) * 131.25.

How to use

  1. Enter original gravity (OG) and final gravity (FG) in specific gravity.
  2. See ABV by the standard formula and a more accurate one for high-alcohol beers.

FAQ

Which formula should I use?+

For beers under 6.5% ABV, the simple formula is fine. Above that, the alternate formula (ABV = (76.08 * (OG - FG) / (1.775 - OG)) * (FG / 0.794)) is more accurate.

What's specific gravity?+

How dense the liquid is compared to water. Pre-fermentation it's usually 1.040 to 1.080. Post-fermentation it drops to around 1.005 to 1.020.
