About

The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements. It correlates well with hydrostatic weighing for most people. Cheap, repeatable, and doesn't need a caliper or scale.

How to use

  1. Pick sex and enter height.
  2. Measure your neck just below the larynx, waist at the navel.
  3. (Women) measure hips at the widest point.
  4. See body fat percent, fat mass, and lean mass.

FAQ

How accurate is this?+

Within 3 to 4% body fat for most people compared to DEXA. Less accurate at the very low (sub-8% men) and very high (35%+) ends. Repeatable, which is what matters for tracking change.

Where exactly do I measure?+

Neck: just below the Adam's apple, level. Waist: at the navel for men, narrowest point for women. Hip (women): widest point of the hips, level. Tape snug, not tight, no compression.
