Bartender slang reference
- Splash: About 1/8 oz (3-4 ml). Quick pour, less than a measured amount.
- Dash: 1 ml. From a bitters bottle, that quick flick of the wrist.
- Rinse: Coat the inside of the glass with a small amount, swirl, discard or leave.
- Float: Gently pour on top of the drink so it stays as a layer (e.g. red wine on a NY sour).
- Pony: 1 fluid ounce (30 ml). The smaller side of a standard jigger.
- Shot / Jigger: 1.5 fluid ounces (44 ml). The standard cocktail measure in the US.
- Free pour count: Bartenders count '1-2-3-4' for a 1.5 oz pour. Each count ≈ 11 ml.
