Pool Chlorine Calculator

How much chlorine to add to your pool.

Add
26.0 fl oz (0.20 gallons)
to raise free chlorine by 1 ppm

Free chlorine targets

  • 1 to 3 ppm: normal range
  • 3 to 5 ppm: high bather load or after rain
  • 10+ ppm: shock (after pool party, algae, or weekly maintenance)
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): keep at 30 to 50 ppm; low CYA needs less chlorine

Cal hypo raises calcium hardness over time. Trichlor and dichlor raise cyanuric acid. Liquid chlorine is just sodium hypochlorite + water and only adds salt. Test chlorine and pH before each adjustment.

FAQ

Liquid vs tablets?+

Liquid (sodium hypochlorite) only adds salt and breaks down quickly. Trichlor and dichlor pucks raise cyanuric acid (stabilizer). Cal hypo raises calcium hardness. Rotate or pick what your water needs.
