Different from DPI (dots per inch), which is a printing concept. PPI is what your screen physically has. Apple's Retina threshold is roughly 220 PPI on a laptop and 326 on phones held closer to your face. The viewing distance changes the perceived sharpness more than the number itself.

Is more PPI always better?+

Past about 220 PPI on a laptop or 300 PPI on a phone, most people can't see individual pixels at typical viewing distance. Higher numbers mostly help when you zoom in or for VR. They also burn more battery driving the display.
